Title: Reporting Live from the Lone Star State

Subject Area and Intended Grade Level: Social Studies/Science--Grades 1-3
Description: The students will research various aspects of their hometown and then give a newscast to share their research findings. Determine purpose for listening. Participate in conversations and discussions.
Learner Outcomes: The students will be able to compare and contrast various aspects of their communities such as the weather, landforms, animals, and vegetation. The student will listen attentively and engage actively in a variety of oral language experiences. The student will generate questions and conduct research using information from various sources. The student will write for a variety of audiences and purposes, and in various forms.
Time: 3 Weeks for the total project.
Week 1: Introductory Video Conference and Research begins
Week 2: 1st Video Conference--City 1 Presents--2nd Video Conference--City 2 Presents
Week 3: Final Videoconference for students to share what they learned about the other community
4 video conference sessions total; first one is 10 minutes as an introduction and each of the others will be 20 minutes in length.
Preparation: The students will be able to meet each other in the introductory video conference the first week of the project. This will also give the students practice with using the video conferencing equipment. The teacher will divide their class into groups to conduct research and prepare the newscast.The teacher will have resources; books and websites; where the students can find the information about their communities.

Video Conference Agenda:
Week 1--5 minutes--Introduction of classes--10 minutes for teachers’ expectations for project.
Week 2--Group A Presents their Newscast and talks about the 4 topics. There will be 5 minutes where the students have their prepared chant/cheer. The next 10 minutes will be spent by the students presenting their newscast. The next 5 minutes will be used for Group B to ask any questions.This time schedule will be repeated on a second video conference during the week for Group B to present their newscast.
Week 3--5 minutes for a welcome/chant/cheer--15 minutes for Group A to share their reflection about Group B’s newscast.--15 minutes for Group B to share their reflection about Group A’s newcast.
Post Activities:The students will prepare a reflection of the other groups’ newscast. The choice of how they reflect is presented will be left up to the students.
Assessment & Evaluation: The students will be graded using rubrics that will assess their newscast and and their research. There will be a rubric for reflection process as well.
Implementation Plans: This project would take place between 2 classes, one in El Paso and one in Houston. There would be an initial planning video conference the second week of September. All dates for the actual video conferences between the classes will be decided at that point in time.
