Subject Area and Intended Grade Level

Folktales and 2nd grade

Description

Literature exchange of a traditional and contemporary folktale to compare and contrast the characters, settings, and plots.

Learner Outcomes

TEKS 2.6B - Compare different versions of the same story in traditional and contemporary folktales with respect to their characters, settings, and plot.

Time

One session - 45 to 60 minutes

Preparation

In advance, read a folktale such as Stone Soup by Marcia Brown, Cactus Soup by Eric A. Kimmel, A Pot of Stone Soup by Robert R. O’Brien or Burgoo Stew by Susan Patron and Mike Shenon. Students could also develop very basic, popsicle stick puppets/characters and a skit or reader’s theater to convey plot.

We recommend  a teacher  pre-conference before the session in order to discuss the book their class will be reading, to test out their equipment and to talk about expectations.

Materials

  • Building Fluency through Reader’s Theater - set from Teacher Created Materials & available through Follett

  • Stone Soup by Marcia Brown, Cactus Soup by Eric A. Kimmel or other similar titles

  • Online free scripts:

  • Sentence strips for headbands to illustrate characters

  • Appropriate items to use as simple props such as vegetable pictures for ingredients for Stone Soup

  • Simple paper doll pattern to create characters and mount on popsicle sticks (example included at the end of this lesson)

  • Glue, crayons, markers, stapler

  • Thinking Map - Double Bubble, large pot (optional),

Recommendation: do not use paper sacks (noise),  suggest to avoid masks

Video Conference Agenda

Agenda 55 minutes

5 min Welcome and introductions. Each class shares their location and brief information about their school.

30 min Presentations : Each class shares a 15-minute presentation on the assigned book.

15 min Compare and Contrast:  (setting, characters and plot) For compare and contrast a double bubble Thinking Map will be used.  Teachers should negotiate who will cover what to prevent duplication.

5 min Closing:   Students to say good-bye and express gratitude for the time shared.

Post Activities

Recommendations:

  •  Teachers can make soup in a crockpot in the classroom with each student contributing one vegetable

  • Teachers with students can research countries of origin for Stone Soup.

  • Students can write their own version of Stone Soup.

Assessment & Evaluation

Thinking map-Double Bubble

 Optional

Kahoot or NearPod

Implementation Plans

This project can be used for a beginner level introduction to video conferencing for the classroom/library in second grade but it can be adapted to meet the needs of all elementary levels.  The coordinator will be the librarian from each campus.

I like that you used thinking maps. That is being pushed right now. I also like the simplicity of it. Teachers definitely don't always have time to get really into the details.
