Subject Area and Intended Grade Level
Folktales and 2nd grade
Description
Literature exchange of a traditional and contemporary folktale to compare and contrast the characters, settings, and plots.
Learner Outcomes
TEKS 2.6B - Compare different versions of the same story in traditional and contemporary folktales with respect to their characters, settings, and plot.
Time
One session - 45 to 60 minutes
Preparation
In advance, read a folktale such as Stone Soup by Marcia Brown, Cactus Soup by Eric A. Kimmel, A Pot of Stone Soup by Robert R. O’Brien or Burgoo Stew by Susan Patron and Mike Shenon. Students could also develop very basic, popsicle stick puppets/characters and a skit or reader’s theater to convey plot.
We recommend a teacher pre-conference before the session in order to discuss the book their class will be reading, to test out their equipment and to talk about expectations.
Materials
-
Building Fluency through Reader’s Theater - set from Teacher Created Materials & available through Follett
-
Stone Soup by Marcia Brown, Cactus Soup by Eric A. Kimmel or other similar titles
-
Online free scripts:

Students can write their own version of Stone Soup.
Assessment & Evaluation
Thinking map-Double Bubble

Implementation Plans
This project can be used for a beginner level introduction to video conferencing for the classroom/library in second grade but it can be adapted to meet the needs of all elementary levels. The coordinator will be the librarian from each campus.

I like that you used thinking maps. That is being pushed right now. I also like the simplicity of it. Teachers definitely don't always have time to get really into the details.
