Subject Area and Intended Grade Level Description
Write a description that could be used to advertise to someone else who might want to do this project with you or so that others can get the gist of your project if they want to replicate it.
Language Arts students in fifth grade and first grade will apply what they learn from two different fictional works to share in a video conference format. The first graders will communicate learning by creating another version on the same theme.
Learner Outcomes
TLW: Compare and contrast the themes or moral lessons of several works of fiction from various cultures. (TEK 5.3A)
W.1.6. With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
R.1.2. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
Time
2 Meetings- 1st for introductions, 2nd for products
15 minutes- Classes will meet beforehand for a get to know you/test the system
Presentation 45/60 minutes
AIMS-30 minutes
Class A will get 10 minutes to present- Little Red Hen
Class B will get 10 minutes to present-Manana Iguana
Class C will “tie it all together”- 10 minutes to ask questions; facilitate discussion
5th/1st-30 minutes
Catherine will share both versions with her class and then her class will present their own version (possible big book)
Class A will present Little Red Hen
Class B will present Manana Iguana
Final 15 minutes share things you learned
Preparation
What will students and teachers need to do to prepare for the videoconference?
Students will describe the Syracuse area using pic collage --2 days--1 day to brainstorm, 1 day to create collage.
The students will contribute to the writing of another version of Manana Iguana and the The Little Red Hen using different characters and setting (eg. farm animals in a barn).
Students will need to be familiar with the stories being read (Little Red Hen, Manana Iguana).
Exchange Project - Group 3
Topic: Fairytale / Folktale - Collaboration between three classes to present a similar folktale from two different cultures and discuss the elements of similarity and difference.
Literary Elements Game
Think about what was the same and different about the characters, setting, events, problem and solution. Think about the theme. Was it the same?
Students create a game format to quiz and facilitate discussion with their videoconference partners. (10 minutes)
Materials
What materials will need to be prepared and used during the videoconference? What visual aids and/or handouts will you use?
Tablets to create pic collage.
Large pieces of paper to create big book.
Videoconference Agenda
Include the agenda for the connection and who will do each part.

What activities do you recommend for follow-up to this videoconference?
1st grade students will create a big book
The 5th grade students will take their learning to a Thinking Map and include a level 2 Frame of Reference question for the Thinking Map.
Create and play family feud game
Assessment & Evaluation
How will you assess the learning? How will you assess the use of videoconferencing?
The Thinking Maps will be assessed according to individual teacher’s preferences. The big book that 1st grade creates will be assessed according to the teacher. First graders will use a rating chart to assess participation in the video conference.To assess the videoconference, each teacher will create their own rubric or survey form in eChalk..
Implementation Plans
Draft your ideas of how you might use this project next year. When might you want to do the project? Who will be the lead coordinator? How many classes might participate from each area? What time of year would this project be implemented?
The project will take place in the fall. An exact date will be determined after the school year has begun. Their will be three classes connecting for each video conference as listed below.
